I think that 13% of my primary school class was called Sarah. Or approx 25% of the girls in it, which is when you think about it a wild number of people to pick a fight with
Oh yes, JT LeRoy! I remember feeling bemused by the celebrity passion for that miserable sounding “true” story. Some people seemed to be especially moved by it - I’m thinking especially of Shirley Manson of Garbage, who wrote Cherry Lips in its honour.
Manson also came out very strongly for TWAW and against JKR just a few years ago, too. I guess the earlier JT LeRoy reveal hadn’t given her any pause for thought?
It's very funny to revisit it and see how very implausible it always was. But it was sexy and countercultural and sentimental, so all the gaping narrative holes got overlooked.
Haha I felt shamed for having this name too when I heard that song on TS’s new album 😆
I'm so glad there are people who share my pain (quite a lot of people actually given the popularity of Sarah in the 80s)
I nearly added something like that myself, as my mum once told me that Sarah was one of the popular names in 1983 when I was born 🙄
