The closing-credit font discussion is interesting.
What I always found objectionable about that show is its simultaneous basking in that era and smug superiority to it. The drinking, the smoking, the sexism etc.: it's all a bit much, as we are invited to bathe in both nostalgia and complacent repulsion.
I do agree about this but I'm not sure I can cosign it as a reason I dislike MM, because "basking in actions I objectively abhor" is also the MO of e.g. the Sopranos and Succession (both of which I like a lot), Fallout (the Ghoul is absolutely heinous, at least on first impression, but INCREDIBLY fun) and probably most other shows I like to some extent. One thing I especially loved about Barry, if you've watched it (it's one of my favourite shows of the last few years), is that it's about that tension between audience titillation and moral abyss, and it manages the astonishing trick of being morally serious and disconcertingly funny.
The Arial thing is exactly the sort of thing that would drive me mad. Have you seen the Papyrus sketches on SNL? Works of genius imo.
Also, if you haven’t seen Justified I highly recommend it as another brilliant turn from Walton Goggins once again playing a complex character with a brilliant arc
Papyrus is SO GOOD. I'm going to put it in the next newsletter now you've reminded me! And I haven't watched Justified, but I both should and will now I'm in #TeamGoggins.
